Build a Cowboy Initiative
This initiative was fueled by
the observation that there was a definite lack of participating in
the rough stock events at High School rodeos specifically in the
saddle bronc and bareback events. The rationale was that
unless action was taken, those events would eventually disappear
from rodeo competition. After much discussion and idea
gathering a BUILD A COWBOY program was developed that makes an
attempt to speak to the above issue. It should be mentioned
that this like any new initiative, is in it formative stage and will
undoubtedly change as it grows. The key concept is to
introduce the skills and knowledge necessary to compete in those
events in such a manner as to foster confidence and competence not
to frighten or discourage participation.
The following areas of
instruction are being offered:
-
Safety -
proper use of safety equipment and bucking stock awareness
-
Skill
Development - spurring action, balance, equipment settings,
bucking chute knowledge, mounting and dismounting, pickup horse
use
-
Instruction - every effort is being made to solicit the teaching
abilities of the people who have been there, the rough stock
cowboys. A number have stepped forward at present who will
conduct clinics at designated Wrangler Junior High rodeos during
the fall and spring rodeo season. A bucking machine has
been purchased outright by the AHSRA and other machines are
being borrowed or rented. Mr. Gerald Miller has committed
his time to getting theses machines to the rodeos. As
well, the use of spur boards has been discussed and, when
available, Mr. Blaine Marr, has agreed to provide pickup horses
and instruction. When participation warrants, there will
be a need to solicit suitable rodeo stock as practice animals.
A list of the rodeos that will provide opportunities for holding
BUILD A COWBOY instruction will available on the AHSRA website
but the first one is set for Bowden, August 31.
-
Parent
Instruction - every attempt will be made to involve parents in
the skill development process. Helping a young competitor
learn to ride well and with confidence requires a team and his
parents are a huge part of that team. Parents are welcome
to watch, listen and ask questions.
-
Motivation
- young people often require reasons to try new things and to
build knowledge. To speak to this, a judging criterion for
growth and proficiency is being developed. Eventually,
this will lead to a scoring procedure and awards. (When
the program gets that far, very generous individuals have
offered to provide these awards.)
-
Physical
and Mental Preparation - During the course of this program every
attempt will be made to provide advice on the necessity of being
physically and mentally ready to accept the challenge of riding
rough stock.
In conclusion,
Mr. Myles Crandall is the driving force behind this initiative and
needs to be thanks for his efforts. Everyone concerned will
need to help in making this work!
